Robert T. Jones tells Wajahat Ali that he grew up Southern Baptist with roots in Mississippi, and has a degree from a Southern Baptist seminary. When a demonstration happened at a church in St. Paul last Sunday pastored by the head of ICE in that area, Jones noticed right away that this was not just any church: it was a Southern Baptist church. He says:

"This is the denomination I grew up in, was founded in 1845. And they were founded that year because they decided that they could no longer be in fellowship with their Northern brethren because the Northern brethren were saying to them, It's inconsistent to call yourself Christian and enslave others based on the color of their skin."

"They were like, No, no, no. We think this is perfectly consistent with the gospel and the Jesus that we worship. They founded an entire denomination on that. And that denomination has become the largest Protestant expression of Christianity in the country today. So if we're confused about, like, why is this so easily acceptable?"

"I mean, part of it is that because inside of white Christianity, the largest Protestant expression of Christianity stems directly from this move to say that, oh, no, actually enslaving others is completely compatible with the gospel and the worship of Jesus and the worship of white Jesus."

Wajahat Ali (who is Muslim) responds by underscoring how critically important it is for people of faith, for other white Christians, to challenge this white supremacist distortion of Christian faith. He says that progressives and anti-religionists are making a huge mistake in taunting and not supporting those believers who are trying to wrest ownership of the Christian tradition from MAGA:

"I've always said this, folks, you need to publicly hear and see from faith leaders, especially white Christians. You need like a public face. You need a reclaiming of Christianity, of religion, of religious values, of religious language. Because you and I know this, Robbie, and this is much to the chagrin of many progressives and liberals.

They say religion's stupid. You guys are idiots."

"Stop believing in God. I said, yes, it's fine. I've heard it all. You might be done with religion, but sadly, for better and for worse, religion is not done with America and American politics. And if you simply dismiss all religion, religious people, then you're dismissing a huge chunk of America that is motivated by God and religion, which now, unfortunately, because we have ceded the ground, it has been taken over by MAGA."

Jones replies:

"If we don't want Christianity to be associated with ICE, if we don't want Christianity to be associated with Trump, if we don't want Christianity to be associated with the Nazis and the racists, we're going to have to build and put out there a different version of Christianity that people can in fact see," (continuedf in /9)

Joy-Ann Reid addresses "people who have a problem with the fact that we came into the church to confront an injustice and do not have a problem with the fact that you have an ICE director, not just an ICE agent, as some people have said, but the director of the ICE field office in the state of Minnesota, also serving as a pastor at Cities Church in St. Paul."

"Now contrast that gospel message to what we have been seeing by ICE and the terrorism that they have engaged in on the streets of St. Paul, Minneapolis and surrounding suburbs and including outstate Minnesota where they kicked in the man's door and came in with big guns and took him out."

"And then NPR reported that when he got to the detention facility, they took trophy photos with him, like he was a slave or an animal that they caught out in the wild. And he wasn't the only one that they did that to.

So somebody tell me, how is it acceptable for David Easterwood to be a pastor when he is condoning this kind of conduct? And not just condoning it."

"Trump reversed the policy that prohibited ICE from attacking people at places of worship in January 2025, after that policy had been in effect for 13 years.

Trump’s green shirts have arrested, brutalized, and tackled people in churches all across America."

The fascist billionaires funding the MAGA movement see anything where people join in common cause as a threat to their wealth.

1. Employment is a threat. Mass layoffs.

2. Union solidarity is a threat to their riches. Ban unions.

3. Church & faith is a threat. Burn synagogues & churches.

4. Democracy itself is a threat. Stop elections. Start wars.

5. Protests are a threat. Criminalize dissent.
