"I never want to hear the words 'America is better than this' again. I never want to be told about America’s better angels.

I want honesty. I want an admission of exactly who we are as a country, and let’s be damn clear about that definition:"

"Trump’s predictable return to the presidency—in what is the final American presidential election of our lifetimes (a conservative plan decades in the making, with help from liberal complicity masquerading as incompetence)—was nothing more and nothing less than the majority of white voters confirming that they want to live in a country that adheres to the standards of living as expressed in 1824 rather than 2024."

Erin Reed reminds us of the practice, life-or-death challenges now facing some of us due to the choice made by the rest of us. She's offering advice to trans people and people who care about them:

"I wanted to share some very practical next steps for my trans readers. Here are the things I recommend:"

"Get your passport. Today. It takes time to come in and getting an updated gender marker will likely be shut down under Trump. - Update every ID your state allows you to. - Make sure you have a supply of medication in case of disruption - If you have a trans kid that is stealth, consider maintaining stealth to get around enforcement of anti-trans laws."

It's going to get very bad for some of us, quickly. Because others have chosen this for us.

"With the election of Donald Trump, our fellow citizens are about to get exactly what they want. There is nothing that God, man, or the Constitution can do about it, because we did it to ourselves. …

The American people, which is all of us, got together on Tuesday and chose everything that’s coming for close to the next decade."

"America was given the opportunity to let a Black and Asian American woman move us beyond a decade of Trump’s racist, sexist, and toxic form of grievance politics with a broad agenda grounded in joy, compassion, and opportunity. And America, specifically the majority of white Americans, said: 'No thanks. We’re good.'”

They voted to make life harder for me and my daughters because based on their conveniently misogynistic and bigoted interpretation of the Bible. ...

I am done being nice to people just because we are related."

The principal problems that got us to this bleakest moment in American history are intertwined. They are the crisis of masculinity, the failure of the news media and the rise of Silicon Valley, and in a way they are all the same problem."

We have to admire how effective propaganda can be. For Blue collar workers to think that those billionaires are going to make them better off truly does beggar belief. I wonder what the share of income / wealth was before and after the Trump years last time and what it will be this time around? Regardless the #GroomedAndDuped victims are now in full on Stockholm syndrome with their abusers.

"When it came to Donald Trump, they went easy on him, and they again and again let him and the far right set the agenda. They constantly treated asymmetrical issues as symmetrical ones – if the Democrats resisted Republican outrages, both sides were “polarized”. In the media everything had two sides, even if one side was the truth and the other was the lie, one side was the human rights or the law and the other side was their violation."
