He served his country; now it's 'turning its back': Georgia veteran stuck in ICE detention after policy shift

Godfrey Wade is a wartime U.S. Army veteran who served overseas and received commendations upon his honorable discharge. Now he's set for deportation.

"...

Shortly after he arrived in the United States, Wade enlisted in the United States Army, 7th Infantry Division, beginning in Aschaffenburg, Germany. He earned commendations for good conduct and wartime service.

After his honorable discharge, he built a wide-ranging career and earned multiple college degrees. He's worked as a master tailor, fashion designer, tennis coach, and chef. He was working at the Georgia Capitol Café before he was detained.

"65-year-old Wade said he spent his first 12 days at Stewart Detention Center sleeping on a makeshift bed on the ground, a result of overcrowding.

"We don't have any bunk space," he said. "We're given what we call boats, and those are placed on the floor with a two-inch mat."

He also said there are only two working urinals for his entire pod of 80 people.

"There's sewage water flowing on the ground," he said.

"...In 2022, the Biden administration directed ICE officers to consider U.S. military service when deciding whether to pursue removal, allowing exemptions for veterans without serious criminal histories.

But an internal ICE memo obtained by 11Alive Investigates shows that directive was rescinded in April of this year.

The memo preserves certain protections for active-duty service members, but leaves others vulnerable. In fact, the new directive explicitly states, "an honorable discharge does not prevent an alien from being subject to immigration enforcement."
