I just finished playing "Skald: Against the Black Priory" and enjoyed every minute of it. I loved its dark story and how it carefully mixes together an interesting fantasy world with cosmic horror. The game mechanics are fun, and up to a certain point the abilities and upgrades you chose are very meaningful and interesting. The balance tilts a bit when you reach the highest levels but overall it's OK.

It has a few flaws, but they're fundamentally tied to this being a game made by a single developer. The story gets a bit too linear at times, and some parts felt too short... but I'll always pick the artistic consistency of a solo effort over the amount of content it can provide. And even then I sunk a good 36 hours in it!

As for the art, it's absolutely delightful. Here's a handful of screenshots from the early game. Just look at how well it uses its #Commodore64-style palette. Look at the amount of detail. It's almost a shame you can't interact with all those objects.

And the intro music is absolutely fantastic. I love how close it sounds to game intros on the #Amiga, masterfully blending two different eras of gaming.

It will likely remain in my memory next to other intro musics that mesmerized me, and still linger after so many years as vivid memories of beautiful games I played. Morrowind, Legend of Grimrock 2, Eye of the Beholder...
