Text from article: I set out to answer a question I hoped would resonate with anyone who’s ever struggled to get the health care they need. Why are people in Albany — and, for that matter, the city of Albany itself — so sick when its most powerful institution is a hospital? I started by speaking to dozens of people whose loved ones had died at Phoebe during COVID-19. It didn’t surprise me to learn that not all the miracles posted on Phoebe’s Facebook page were true. Maude Burke’s relatives told me she hadn’t fully recovered from COVID-19. She’d been readmitted to the hospital a couple days after she was discharged and died shortly thereafter. Nor did it surprise me that relatives like hers were bitter about their loss and that some blamed Phoebe for mishandling their loved ones’ cases. (A Phoebe spokesperson said, “We are confident that Ms. Burke received quality, compassionate care during her stay at Phoebe and that she was appropriately discharged.”) What I didn’t expect was how fearful people were to criticize Phoebe on the record and how powerless they were to hold the hospital to account.
