THE NEW YORK TIMES PUT THE CHURCH'S OWN VIDEO ONLINE.

New York Times put the video from the Memphis megachurch showing Savage being praised as a model of repentance and the church breaking into wild applause online.

How did that make Woodson and other survivors of childhood sexual abuse feel, we might ask?

And why did New York Times do that? I don't buy that they needed to do so to tell this story.

He did not do so to confront him for sexually abusing a minor. He did so to hold him up as a model of Christian repentance. The church broke out in raucous applause on behalf of Savage.

And then — this is the point I want to underline — as Woodson states,

"What happened next was so enraging, that I wanted the world to see it. That's when the New York Times put the church's own video online."

Something I'd like to draw attention to in the video: starting at 6.30, Jules Woodson recounts her sexual assault at age 17 by a pastor in her Southern Baptist church in Texas, Andy Savage.

In 2018, she got the courage to confront him in an email. He was then a pastor of Highpoint mega-church in Memphis.

As she says, the Sunday after she emailed Savage, the church's head pastor brought Savage up before the congregation.

"Advocating for abuse reform threatens none of those things.

The only thing it threatens is power. The power of those who perpetrate abuse, and those who benefit from the system that gives cover to abuse."

And then she writes that as she made the film and as it premieres on YouTube, she and the women who tell their stories in it know full well they will be inundated with hate for speaking. Because this happens over and over. She writes,

"Isn’t it wild, this relentless vilification of survivors & advocates? Especially within a community that purports to care so much about morality and purity and truth?"

Kristin Du Mez's important film "For Our Daughters" debuted today (link below). On her blog as she announces the debut, she writes,

"I cover a lot of controversial topics in my writing, from racism to Christian nationalism to authoritarianism, but nothing draws fire like drawing attention to sexual abuse & coverups in white evangelical churches.

Nothing even comes close."
