Someone asked how they can follow news on here. You can find lots of news accounts by scrolling to the news categories on this page:

➡️ fedi.directory/society

To follow an account, paste its address into your search box on Mastodon etc.

There are country-specific news categories, for example US News is fedi.directory/tag/us-news

Some news accounts post a lot, and it may sometimes overwhelm your timeline. You can avoid this by using Mastodon's Lists feature:

Hey, folks from what was once called Twitter! My fedi tip is: follow hashtags. You can search for hashtags of interest and then follow them just like you can follow any account. Your timeline will fill up quickly if you do that, and then you can start to follow interesting people in the timeline.

For example, some of the hashtags I follow include #blackmastodon, #mutualaid, and #canpoli, among others.

I've found that I can get news just as fast here as folks on #X.

You can be signed into many Mastodon apps at once with the same account. If you're unsure which app you want to use, you can compare several simultaneously.

There are lots of third party apps you can use instead of the official ones. Third party apps tend to have better features, it's worth trying them!

The official Mastodon site lists third party apps at joinmastodon.org/apps. Scroll past the official apps and click on your platform (Android, iOS etc) to narrow the selection

You can edit your posts on Mastodon by clicking ⋯ and "Edit".

When you edit a post, everyone who has boosted your post will be notified about it, every single time. The reason for this is to prevent abuse of the edit feature with "bait & switch" tactics, where someone might do a harmless post, wait for people to boost it and then edit it into something offensive.

So, if you do edit, keep in mind that each edit will send everyone who boosted your post a notification.
