The week is over, here are some charts:
For two weeks in a row, #Mastodon brought more #traffic than #X / #Twitter to heise.de.
But I forgot, that's not just via @heiseonline, but also @heisec, @ct_Magazin, @heiseautos, @iX_Magazin etc. (but for Twitter its the same).
#Bluesky is way behind, #Threads even more. Only Twitter is clearly falling.

Last week, we asked #NewstodonFriday readers if anyone else felt sick at the thought of the U.S. election, and here we are. Not much levity in this week’s thread, but rather stories on the state of journalism and media, how different outlets plan to tackle the Trump administration, and even one about how political polarization can literally make you sick. We’ve sprinkled a little lighter fare in there, including a beautiful Tiny Desk concert from Meshell Ndegeocello (close your eyes and scroll to the bottom if you can’t bear to read any news). Please check out the stories, follow the publications, click on the stories, subscribe, donate and otherwise support if you can. Independent media matters now, more than ever.

Exactly two years ago, we started to post links on #Mastodon via our account @heiseonline 👇
mastodon.social/@heiseonline/1…
It took longer, than I expected, but here we are: it seems like this account now brings continuously more #traffic to heise.de than #X (#Twitter) in its entirety, although it only has ¼ of the follower number (and many of them don't seem to be active anymore).
I'll prepare some graphs after the weekend.

Vorerst ist das hier der offizielle Mastodon-Account von heise online. Wird jetzt erst einmal händisch befüllt, aber wir haben schon weitergehende Pläne und wollen hier mehr machen.Mastodon
The easy path lies in escaping from the billionaire overlords into the arms of the VCs. The path is laid out and the welcome is certain. Much more difficult, but ultimately necessary, is to not just give voice to the struggle, but actually participate in building out the open defensible systems necessary to sustain that voice. Otherwise, when we need you most, you will be silenced once again.
So, inviting you to join us here. It won't be easy, and we need your help.

To state the obvious. The way to build a resilient social media counterweight to corporate controlled social media is not to join another corporate social media network. The opportunity before us is to build an open system ecosystem that can not be commandeered. And the only real choice for this is Mastodon and the Fediverse.
And for this to happen, influencers will need to use their influence.

Back in 2022 there was a moment of opportunity to create a truly open social media ecosystem. Many people created accounts here and the system struggled to deal with the influx. Also, technical features were lacking. So, people mostly went back to X, and ignored the risks associated with using the 'master's tools.' Some later went to Threads, again ignoring the obvious risks.
We should be smarter than that now.

"I will never again devote my energies to building up an audience on a platform whose management can sever my relationship to that audience at will." -Cory Doctorow 2024 (pluralistic.net/2024/11/02/uly…)
Sure Bluesky seems like the shiny object right now. Lots of Brazilians went there. They are getting good press for their architecture, and so far, it does not seem to be enshittified. But, what happens when some billionaire buys it nine months before the next election?

"The Master’s Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master’s House.” - Audre Lorde, 1984
Thanks to the mostly one way interface from Threads to Mastodon today we saw some discontent among high follower progressive Threads accounts. These influencers, who had migrated from X, are upset that Meta censored and demoted their messages during the election. A few are saying they will now leave Threads, and go to Bluesky. Perhaps they should consider truly non-corporate social media.

This time next week, the U.S. will have voted. Anyone else feel sick?! This is our regular #NewstodonFriday thread, which highlights the newsrooms and reporters who have an active presence in the fediverse. Inevitably, we have political stories and politics-adjacent stories, along with some lighter fare, and some that straddle the two (@TexasObserver’s story on a new Greg Abbott musical fits perfectly into that category). Please check out the stories, follow the publications, click on the stories, subscribe, donate and otherwise support if you can. See you on the other side.
