"Trump has turned his campaign into a pitch for hyper-traditional masculinity. At this year’s Republican national convention, he walked on stage to the James Brown song It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World and was introduced by Dana White, the president of the Ultimate Fighting Championship who was caught slapping his wife on camera."

Carter Sherman looks at the Lincoln Project's new video featuring Sam Elliott saying, “It’s time to be a man and vote for a woman,” and concludes that "masculinity and people’s views on gender roles may be more important than ever in 2024."

"'For a lot of Gen Z women, the current intermingling of religion and politics on the political right is very unappealing because they’re more progressive on many issues, including support for LGBTQ rights and abortion rights,' Deckman said. 'I think many young women see the church or organized religion as being — if not hostile, then certainly not supportive of their political values.'”

PRRI CEO Melissa Deckman "says that in addition to the classic reasons why Gen Zers are dropping out of religion (e.g., that they stopped believing), there’s a political element at work as well. More than 60% of young adults who had left organized religion said they did so in part because of its poor treatment of LGBTQ individuals."

"After decades of men leading the way in becoming “nones,” or religiously unaffiliated, young women are now taking up that charge. In PRRI’s data, nonreligious Gen Z women outnumber nonreligious Gen Z men, 39% to 31%; in Barna’s, it’s 38% to 32%; and in a study from the Survey Center on American Life, it’s 39% to 34%."

"The gender gap between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump could not be more vivid. In a new NBC poll, Harris is winning among women 58 percent to 37 percent, while Trump is leading Harris among men 52 percent to 40 percent."

"As it is, the two are clashing in an election marked by a gulf so wide, the phrase 'gender gap' doesn’t do it justice. In ways that go deeper than mere politics, and with implications for the world beyond the US, the presidential election is increasingly looking like a war between men and women."

"I hesitate to give JD Vance any ideas, but if American women were denied the vote, Donald Trump would be restored to the White House in a landslide. Similarly, if men were removed from the franchise, Kamala Harris would be swept into the Oval Office in an even bigger earthquake."

This Day in Legal History:
Equal Rights Party Formed

On September 20, 1884, a group of #American #suffragists formed the
🔸Equal Rights Party 🔸
in San Francisco, marking a significant moment in the fight for #gender #equality in the United States.

The party was established with the goal of securing
"equal and exact justice"
for all citizens, regardless of color, sex, or nationality.

A key focus was on amending state laws to recognize women as voters

and to ensure equal property rights,

aiming to empower women to become self-sufficient rather than remain dependent.

In a bold move, the party nominated Mrs. #Belva #Lockwood as its candidate for U.S. President and #Marietta #Snow for Vice-President.

Lockwood, a lawyer and prominent suffragist, became one of the first women to actively campaign for the presidency.

While Grover Cleveland ultimately won the election, Lockwood’s candidacy broke new ground.

She garnered around 4,149 votes, all cast by male voters, as women did not yet have the right to vote nationally.

This event showcased the growing momentum of the women’s suffrage movement,
which would eventually lead to the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920,
granting women the right to vote.

The Equal Rights Party's formation highlighted the early intersection of gender, legal rights, and political advocacy in American history

"Sixty-seven percent of women 18 to 29 supported Vice President Kamala Harris in a New York Times/Siena College poll in six swing states last month, compared with 40 percent of young men.

Fifty-three percent of young men in those states backed Donald J. Trump, compared with 29 percent of young women."
