Did his views influence the #nix community in any way? I'm thinking: attacking or harrassing other users based on their ethnicity? From what I've read, his ban was not related to that.

#nixos

the ban was to be lifted when the assembly had been formed. It’s explained in the fora. What does this person’s personal opinion on a completely unrelated topic have to do with anything like #nix or #nixos?

@nebucatnetzer Same here. He should be banned by the rules community governance board sets up that applies to everyone. Not just with the sentiment of the past.

He has a small window to clean up his act if he to be apart of the #NixOS community.

Just to be clear, for those who don't follow all the drama (I don't really think even I do at this point...): this is who the new #nixos governance body decided to unban. Just one example among many.

This could be about changing of the guard / rules. He has to break the rules according to to the new regime. If he breaks those rules, then he could be rebanned.

This gives the new regime objective reasons to ban him. Not some non-definitive reason to ban him.

This also gives him a chance to clean up his act. He has lots of knowledge that the community can benefit from. If he is willing to behave, there is no reason he shouldn't be allowed to be a part of the #NixOS community.

05:18 CEST today: #nixos foundation board announces a group of 7 people who are supposed to be in charge of establishing community governance: https://discourse.nixos.org/t/nixos-foundation-board-constitutional-assembly-appointment/45504

05:51 CEST: first action from that new group is to reinstate the account of a fascist who was banned (way too late) the week before: https://nixpkgs.zulipchat.com/#narrow/stream/410945-zulip/topic/Moderation/near/438925828

Sounds like I was right in not trying to take part in this process, it's just a complete joke from beginning to end.

For another example of the #nixos foundation's incompetence... Several large companies use a platform called Benevity for employee donations matching. I know for a fact that there's at least hundreds, if not low-thousands of $ in donation given to the NixOS foundation through their platform.

6 months ago I asked the Foundation "so uh, that money doesn't show up anywhere, are you receiving it?"

Asked 5 more times since, still no answer. They just don't know, and aren't in a hurry to find out.

As a well-respected contributor, perhaps this is your chance to get in there and make a change.

#nixos

The #nixos foundation has issued a fairly empty statement that commits to nothing other than "we promise we'll try to make someone else take decisions later!".

You can tell it's working great because the Discourse thread for that statement is currently 40% people discussing whether minorities really should be protected and 40% debating whether sealioning can be objectively defined. No moderator action so far ofc, and no-one banned.

I think rhendric might have written the best summary of the whole #NixOS / Anduril sponsorship situation that I've seen so far. Beautiful post.

If there ever was a case study in "having a legal structure does not automatically safeguard your project governance", well, the #NixOS situation is probably it.

It's also quite bizarre to see people *already* rewriting history to claim that the project is failing because "it's anarchic and there is no leadership" when the hierarchical side of the project *literally is the root cause of the problem*.

If you are using #NixOS, take note that @delroth is stepping away from the project, which leaves the #sudo package officially unmaintained.

Content warning: my opinion on the nixos situation

i didn't care so much about the #nixos drama until just now, realising jonringer is the anduril employee that made the Nix community look really unappealing the other day by complaining about minority representation. Then seeing /r/NixOS complain Nix is turning "woke", suddenly you start putting 2 and 2 together on why there's black PR against the under-supported moderation team.

To give an idea of how far behind the #nixos leadership is: me leaving has finally triggered them to ban jonringer - constant annoyance you might remember from such bangers as "complaining about minorities", "complaining about everything being politics now", etc. - for 6 weeks. Like, uhh, that's shorter than he's been actively acting as a disruptive asshole. What are you even trying to do? Why so late?

Can the leadership even do anything else than react to stuff directly in front of their face?

So, summary of today: I'm gone from #nixos indefinitely. At the very least, I'm not coming back until the project leadership has banned Anduril and its employees from ever contributing again - and even then it's an "if".

The foundation, moderation team, and other people with explicit power have protected Anduril and their supporters for too long. The time for action was 2 months ago, if not earlier. Now we've reached a point of no return for me, and it's time for consequences to get realized.

“Now ‘everything is political’.”

… Says the smoked gammon working for the defense contractor at the heart of the controversy.

Oh, quelle surprise!

#nixOS #anduril

I think something that many might not realize about large open source projects like #nixos is that despite a huge number of contributors:

1. Number of contributions follows a power law.
2. Contributors aren't fungible, instead it's tens-hundreds of individual SPOFs.
3. Willingness to put your time to fix problems for others (not just stuff you have a personal interest in) is highly correlated with strong ethics.

=> Piss off the wrong 5 people and the project grinds to a halt within a month.

3rd most active contributor to #nixos drops from the project due to the lack of leadership from the Foundation supposedly backing the project.

Everything is fine, I'm sure the arms dealers will compensate the lost contributions. /s

I sympathize with the authors and signers of the letter, but honestly their proposal seems a bit naive to me. Lets assume Eelco just steps aside willingly and without grudges. Then what? The fracturing of the Nix community (or healing thereof) does not hinge on one persons opinions. It also did not start to fracture with the founding of DetSys or the selection of selection of conflicting sponsors for conferences. Those events just shone a light on what was already missing.

#NixOS

#NixOS has been simpler for me than #Debian lately. The packages and the options tabs in search.nixos.org have helped.

I've just read the latest Nix community trash fire^W^Wopen letter (https://save-nix-together.org).

The commentary on Eelco sitting on leadership roles and not doing anything + not allowing contributions fully reflects my experience with joining the #NixOS infra team. When I expressed interest to join the infra team when it was clearly understaffed and malfunctioning, this was blocked for **6 months** by Eelco, even though I was supported by the foundation board member nominally in charge of infra.
