@990000 I would go further to say that applying #copyright law to #AI will take us *further* from the equitable future we want. If copyright is successfully applied to AI, what we will see after the dust settles is a handful of media behemoths that profit mightily from AI, without slowing down the damage that AI does to the value of creative human labor.

I always return to this pithy guide by @emilymbender when thinking about this topic: we need to think of AI as *automation*, albeit one that is more effective at displacing a wide variety of human labor than ever. We can’t use copyright to stop automation; it will just enrich a different set of kingpins without stopping its effects.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eK0md9tQ1KY

Much as I dislike the theft of human labor that feeds many of the #generativeAI products we see today, I have to agree with @pluralistic that #copyright law is the wrong way to address the problem.

To frame the issue concretely: think of whom copyright law has benefited in the past, and then explain how it would benefit the individual creator when it is applied to #AI. (Hint: it won’t.)

Copyright law is already abused and extended to an absurd degree today. It already overreaches. It impoverishes society by putting up barriers to creation and allowing toll-collectors to exist between citizen artists and their audience.

*Labor* law is likely what we need to lean on. #unions and #guilds protect creators in a way that copyright cannot. Inequality and unequal bargaining power that lead to exploitation of artists and workers is what we need to address head-on.

Copyright will not save us.

Ewww… I won’t update to that version.

AI have many use, but it is definitely not for occupying our phone storage and does nothing useful. My phone have been stuffed by meta chatbot, and I don’t want another chatbot in my phone that have no real application.

"While it may seem harmless if #AI systems cheat at games, it can lead to "breakthroughs in deceptive AI capabilities" that can spiral into more advanced forms of AI deception in the future, Park added.

"Some AI systems have even learned to cheat tests designed to evaluate their safety, the researchers found. In one study, AI organisms in a digital simulator "played dead" in order to trick a test built to eliminate AI systems that rapidly replicate.

"By systematically cheating the safety tests imposed on it by human developers and regulators, a deceptive AI can lead us humans into a false sense of security," says Park."

"The most striking example of #AI deception the researchers uncovered in their analysis was Meta's CICERO, an AI system designed to play the game Diplomacy, which is a world-conquest game that involves building alliances. Even though Meta claims it trained CICERO to be "largely honest and helpful" and to "never intentionally backstab" its human allies while playing the game, the data the company published along with its Science paper revealed that CICERO didn't play fair.

"We found that Meta's AI had learned to be a master of deception," says Park. "While Meta succeeded in training its AI to win in the game of Diplomacy -- CICERO placed in the top 10% of human players who had played more than one game -- Meta failed to train its AI to win honestly."

#Apple #AppStore #AI #GenerativeAI #ContentModeration: "Apple has removed a number of AI image generation apps from the App Store after 404 Media found these apps advertised the ability to create nonconsensual nude images, a sign that app store operators are starting to take more action against these types of apps.

Overall, Apple removed three apps from the App Store, but only after we provided the company with links to the specific apps and their related ads, indicating the company was not able to find the apps that violated its policy itself.

Apple’s action comes after we reported on Monday that Instagram advertises nonconsensual AI nude apps. By browsing Meta’s Ad Library, which archives ads on its platform, when they ran, on what platforms, and who paid for them, we were able to find ads for five different apps, each with dozens of ads. Two of the ads were for web-based services, and three were for apps on the Apple App Store. Meta deleted the ads when we flagged them. Apple did not initially respond to a request for comment on that story, but reached out to me after it was published asking for more information. On Tuesday, Apple told us it removed the three apps on its App Store." https://www.404media.co/apple-removes-nonconsensual-ai-nude-apps-following-404-media-investigation/

AI errors are hard for us to see.

“…the hardest kinds of errors to spot. They couldn’t be harder for a human to detect if they were _specifically designed_ to go undetected. The human in the loop isn’t just being asked to spot mistakes — they’re being actively deceived. The AI isn’t merely wrong, it’s constructing a subtle ‘what’s wrong with this picture’-style puzzle.”

This lawsuit is a minor headache for #Amazon. Allegedly a woman was fired for doing her job which was keeping Amazon’s #ArtificialIntelligence from using content illegally (probably copyrighted material).

Her boss reportedly did not like that “do-gooder attitude” & demoted her, before firing her during maternity leave. This case could open up lawsuits against Amazon’s #AI in the future.

AI 'art' is metastasising through the internet. I just looked up Hieronymus Bosch and there were more AI imitations than I expected (or recall seeing on previous searches). I tried three search engines: Google, DuckDuckGo, and Brave. At a glance, Google seemed to be the worst offender, which shouldn't surprise me, given that its functionality & quality seem to have plummeted in recent months...

What people forget about Luddites isn’t that they protest technology, it’s that they were protesting factory owners who used technology to create shoddy products while oppressing labor.

Editing to say: Whenever I hear someone say Luddites in a derogatory way, especially about #AI, I try to offer them links about this and am surprised when some people still take an anti-Luddites stance

“Shupe could be considered the author of “selection, coordination, and arrangement of text generated by artificial intelligence,” the agency wrote, backdating her copyright registration to October 10, 2023, the day that Shupe had originally attempted to register her work. #AI #Influencers #InfluencerMarketing #Hype: "Like the threat behind crypto’s “have fun staying poor” slogan, AI needs the rest of us to believe in its unstoppable ascendancy because that belief is basically all it has. AI products aren’t about whether anyone wants or needs AI products. They’re about how people could want or need those products, eventually, if everyone stays the course and also keeps pumping money into AI companies. You can call a product bad as long as you immediately point out that obviously it’s going to become good (Brownlee even nods to this in his Humane review, saying that the pin is “the new worst product I’ve ever reviewed in its current state”), because AI products are less products and more promotional tools for the future, for technological advancement, for whatever other big concepts Silicon Valley goons trot out to throw a smokescreen over the barely-functional, largely useless junk they need us to believe is inevitable."

"By including disinformation into the model and running a simulation, the result tells us very little about how it changed opinion polls. But running the simulation many times, we can use the statistics to determine the percentage change in the likelihood of a candidate winning a future election if disinformation of a given magnitude and frequency is present. In other words, we can now measure the impact of fake news using computer simulations"

I've been using the words "Bumpy" and "Smooth" to describe a lot of functions, processes, plays, capabilities, lately.

And sometimes, when I say things like "I get what you are trying to do here, but this feels very bumpy to me", I sometimes get some weird looks.

You've all likely heard the mantra "Slow is Smooth, and Smooth is Fast", popularised by the Navy Seals and or other SPECOPS groups.

Well this is essentially that. Smooth ways of operating, processes, functions etc, are ones that are consistent, well understood and as a by product of that, produce quality results at speed.

Notice I said as a by product. I roll my eyes every time I hear software engineering leaders who chant on about Agility, and Speed. Those are things you get, when you go well. And to do well, you need Smooth Operations .. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TYv2PhG89A

On the other side of the coin, bumpy operations, processes, functions etc are those where results are variable, quality is not a focus and the general mental models and understanding of the people performing them is not aligned.

Bumpy eats up resources, it slows people down, it leads to mistakes that need to be addressed reactively, causing yet more Bumpiness.

If you want to go fast? Go Well. Go Smooth. Invest in consistency, documentation, shared understandings, metrics.

On top of that, automating Bumpy things is hard. Automating Smooth things is easier, and automation itself brings a new level of Smooth. A new level of Fast. A new level of Going Well.

Oh yeah, and applying #AI to Bumpy things leads to much sorrow.
