When I talk about the importance of going all in on the Fediverse, I speak based on experience.

At Opera we built a massive user community. When I quit, we had something like 35 million registered users and 35 million monthly visitors.

The new Opera management did not see the value of that. They believed it was cheaper and better to just use Facebook and that investing in your own community was a waste of money. So they closed down MyOpera and built a following on Facebook and Twitter instead. Then they got caught by the bait and switch when Facebook changed and you would no longer reach your audience, without paying. Later on Twitter changed as well.

This is important to explain to companies and institutions as they go shopping for social media sites to invest in. The best investment is clearly in your own site, being part of the Fediverse. It is not even all that expensive to do. It may take longer to build, but at least it is your own.

Not saying you cannot build a following on those other sites, but your long term strategy should be the Fediverse with your own server.

We try to lead the way here and thus we build Vivaldi Social. Not just for our selves, but to make a point and support the Fediverse.

Elon Musk to be summoned to UK Parliament over X's role in riots

Recent provocative statements have added to concerns about Musk’s role in X

Senator @Paulatics Paula Simons rose today in Question Period in Canada’s Senate to ask the government why (the hell! - my words lol) Government is still using that platform of hate, misogyny and Russian misinformation called X!?

Boost to support the Senator!! And ask your MP, MLA, or other government representative wherever you are to do the same!!

#Fediverse is roughly analogous to how mutual aid groups organize. We should look to meatspace and figure out how to translate it.

So, instead of telling new #Mastodon users to “just follow some hashtags and people you find interesting”, we need to rebuild people’s community-building skills and translate those into the digital realm.

#Twitter, #Bluesky, #Threads, #instagram, etc are all about mass culture delivery. Let’s figure out how to do distributed cultural development.

We’re getting it wrong when we tell folks that #Mastodon is just like “Old #Twitter”. If you want that, that’s #Bluesky. Mastodon is a different kind of place.

This is a more intimate community that discourages “influencing” because there’s no profit motive for eyeballs. The microblogging approach may look similar to Twitter but the way the communities form and conversations evolve is fundamentally different.

It’s no uptopia; we’ve got a shitload of work to do to make it safer.

Even though I haven't used my Twitter/X account in over two years, I am still squatting my username.

But I decided to take the next step and delete my tweets before they're fed into their "AI".

cnn.com/2024/10/21/tech/x-twit…

I found @luca's script super useful for this, highly recommend!

I collected posts from people using TweetXer to exterminate their Tweets. It makes me happy that my script helps them with letting go.

With Musk serving as a de facto cabinet member, it's reasonable to assume that X/Twitter will freely provide federal agencies with the sort of data that would normally require a warrant.

It's equally safe to assume that far right agency heads will use that data to pursue administration goals, like immigrant deportation, abortion prosecution, protest suppression, etc.

If you know anyone who insists on using Twitter, please urge them to be excruciatingly careful about what they post there from now on. Information and data that may have seemed innocuous a year ago are now a threat vector, and the person posting them may not always be the person most at risk.

For some reason people fleeing the sinking #Twitter / #X ship for #BlueSky don't seem to be aware of the fact that crypto bros at #BlockchainCapital bought a huge stake in the company just a few weeks ago. Like these are basically the same crypto bros who just helped #ElonMusk buy Twitter. They might even be literally the same people (I strongly suspect they are but I'm too lazy to check). Either way #BlockchainCapital was co-founded by #BrockPierce, who also brought you #Tether, AKA the company that Trump's transition team chairman manages $120 billion for. Pierce is also a friend of the #Netanyahu family.

You don't have to take my word for it. Here's the official press release: bsky.social/about/blog/10-24-2…

Moving to BlueSky is not an escape. Growing a base there is just putting in a bunch of work to create a platform that will be co-opted by crypto bros as soon as X breaks in half.

p.s. crypto bros (#a16z) also own #Substack

The Newsmast Foundation was created in response to misinformation and the oppression of marginalised communities and expert voices on Big Tech social media.

In light of the U.S. election results, those communities are more at risk than ever.

The week is over, here are some charts:
For two weeks in a row, #Mastodon brought more #traffic than #X / #Twitter to heise.de.
But I forgot, that's not just via @heiseonline, but also @heisec, @ct_Magazin, @heiseautos, @iX_Magazin etc. (but for Twitter its the same).

#Bluesky is way behind, #Threads even more. Only Twitter is clearly falling.

I've finally decided to delete all my old posts on #Twitter, using the script that @carolin recommended.

However, Twitter apparently denies me access to the console for the page. Does anyone have any similar problems, and is there a way to fix this?

I _really_ don't want to delete all my old posts manually before shutting down my account!

Are social media platforms that utilize algorithmic feeds inherently anti-free-speech?

In normal discourse, we all have a voice and we all have the choice whether to listen. In the algorithmic space, formulas are used to decide which voices to amplify and also which voices to de-amplify.

Here on Vivaldi Social (Mastodon), I see posts that people I follow post, including posts they choose to boost. No formulas needed. This is, IMHO, the closest to free-speech you can find, although there are some hate speech rules, which is IMHO a good thing. Basically the same as in normal, social discourse.

On Facebook I see posts Facebook thinks I want to see (and boy do they get it wrong), as well as a lot of AI generated nonsense. There are some posts in there that I am interested in, but most are not.

Twitter has turned into amplification of what Elon wants to amplify, mostly hate speech and misinformation. There are still interesting voices in there, but they are harder and harder to find.

What do you think?

There seem to be people still on X just so they can tell us how bad X and its owner is. Dude, we know. That’s why we left

#Twitter

If you’ve just left Twitter/X welcome! You’ve come to the right place.

There is no algorithm here so we encourage lots of following and “retweeting”. You can also follow #hashtags as well.

Posts are sometimes called toots. Retweets are sometimes called boosts or retoots.

If you want people to follow you, be sure to have a profile picture, something in your description about you, and some engagement: posts, comments, stars, boosts. People also usually do a post that is an introduction to them (be sure to use a hashtag, #introduction) and it can help to pin that to your profile so people can boost it.

One thing we always try to do is add alt text to images for multiple reasons, you can read about that here:
wetdry.world/@ipg/113449765700…

People have added additional tips in the comments below which you may want to check out.

Many of us (all?) are grieving the US election now so comedy is appreciated.

from alex (dremenec.com):

Generally we think of alt-text as the domain of those with accessibility needs.

However alt-text is useful for many reasons, which benefit your viewers, as well as you, the creator!

Exactly two years ago, we started to post links on #Mastodon via our account @heiseonline 👇

mastodon.social/@heiseonline/1…

It took longer, than I expected, but here we are: it seems like this account now brings continuously more #traffic to heise.de than #X (#Twitter) in its entirety, although it only has ¼ of the follower number (and many of them don't seem to be active anymore).
I'll prepare some graphs after the weekend.

If you want to remove your X account but are worried that someone might register your username later, do this:

1. Open 2 different browsers in their private windows
2. In the first browser: Log in to your Twitter account.
3. In the second browser, go through the account creation process, add something like "Deactivated" as a name. Skip everything else.
4. On both: Navigate to Settings and privacy.
5. Under Your account, select Account information.
6. Update your Username to something different.
7. Save the changes.
8. Immediately rename the other "Deactivated" user name to your own username.
9. Take a full data backup
10. Continue on deactivating the real now renamed user.

By altering your username and email, your original handle becomes available for immediate use so you can register it to yourself as an "empty shell" account.

I just proofed these instructions working by finally deactivating my account. Haven't posted anything this year.

I will not spend any thought ever again to Truth Social, Gab, X and dark onion websites. They are all the same - not healthy for anyone. Please leave now.

It's time for charities and for-good organisations to ditch X - a platform which helped grow and fund the Trump campaign - and move to alternatives where they aren't at the mercy of a single persons politics.

As a start, we're excited to be featured as an organisation which can help in this @BylineTimes article

There's a lot of hard work to be done, but we like hard work. Hard work is good work.

Elon Musk May Be An Illegal Immigrant!

Musk Could Have US Citizenship Revoked If He Lied on Immigration Forms

The richest man in the world appears to have worked in the US without authorization. According to experts, if he did so and lied about it as part of the immigration process, he could be denaturalized.
