This is a powerful statement from UK journalists and we agree.

X is no longer neutral and no longer a home for journalists.

We are ready to support any and all journalists who make the move to open social networks, now and in the New Social future.

Please, feel free to send journalists or publications our way if they have any questions. Or, if you're a journalist yourself, feel free to reach out.

How a Visual Storyteller Gets the Right Image — and the Right Tone

#Photography is a powerful journalistic tool, providing visual evidence and evoking emotions that urge us to understand the experiences of others. Here, ProPublica’s Sarahbeth Maney offers suggestions for aspiring visual storytellers.

don’t let the failures of some (major) news outlets disillusion you with media as a whole. and ESPECIALLY don’t let those failures desensitize you to attacks on free expression.

we can criticize media failures while also fiercely defending media freedom.

Well done to the team at The Guardian for standing up against X.

Their statement: "The US presidential election campaign served only to underline what we have considered for a long time: that X is a toxic media platform and that its owner, Elon Musk, has been able to use its influence to shape political discourse."

We look forward to helping the wave of journalists and publications that will no doubt follow.

In a mission statement earlier this week, the team at @ProPublica explained their plans on holding the incoming Trump administration’s feet to the fire. Here, they dive into the specific issues journalists will be following, and how to get in touch with reporters if you have information to share.

Last week, we asked #NewstodonFriday readers if anyone else felt sick at the thought of the U.S. election, and here we are. Not much levity in this week’s thread, but rather stories on the state of journalism and media, how different outlets plan to tackle the Trump administration, and even one about how political polarization can literally make you sick. We’ve sprinkled a little lighter fare in there, including a beautiful Tiny Desk concert from Meshell Ndegeocello (close your eyes and scroll to the bottom if you can’t bear to read any news). Please check out the stories, follow the publications, click on the stories, subscribe, donate and otherwise support if you can. Independent media matters now, more than ever.

Latest FOSS Academic post:

Hey, Journalists: X is now Truth Social. Start treating it that way.

fossacademic.tech/2024/11/08/A…

In which I argue that, if they cannot leave X, journalists need to treat it like Truth Social. Dip in, copy what you gotta copy, and get out.

Powerful words from true journalists at @ProPublica

"We face the biggest test of our professional lives. Now we get to see if we really meant it when we said we will hold power to account. Will we do so when our subjects have true power on their side and a willingness to use it? We may be harassed. We may be sued. We may be threatened with violence. We may be ignored. Are we just sunshine journalists or are we ready?"

Eritrean journalist Akberet Beyene was placed under house arrest in her home country as part of a crackdown on the media, and eventually fled the country dressed in her mother’s clothes and carrying her sister’s passport. It was just the first step in her journey to Canada as an asylum seeker. She tells her story in a new book, Geographies of the Heart,
which is excerpted in @thetyee.

This time next week, the U.S. will have voted. Anyone else feel sick?! This is our regular #NewstodonFriday thread, which highlights the newsrooms and reporters who have an active presence in the fediverse. Inevitably, we have political stories and politics-adjacent stories, along with some lighter fare, and some that straddle the two (@TexasObserver’s story on a new Greg Abbott musical fits perfectly into that category). Please check out the stories, follow the publications, click on the stories, subscribe, donate and otherwise support if you can. See you on the other side.

But voters need to understand why #Trump is attacking the #press, & where it will lead if he is reelected. The future of American #democracy is the key question of this #election. Trump has left an ample record showing that he is committed neither to the rule of #law nor to rule by the #people—after all, he tried to steal the last presidential election after he lost it.

The point here is not to plead for pity for the poor #press. Courageous reporting is courageous because it puts #journalists in conflict w/powerful people. Anyone who expects adulation all the time should go into a different business. (This also goes for any #media owner who might feel tempted to tone down criticism of #Trump [#Bezos].)

Although #Trump’s attacks on the #press are not new, they have escalated in recent weeks. Trump has said that #CBS should lose its broadcast license over a 60 Minutes interview w/VP #KamalaHarris, his Democratic opponent. He has pressured #FoxNews to stop airing ads that are critical of him. He has threatened #Google for showing negative stories about him. He has previously vowed to #jail #reporters.

"NPR...reported that 'more than 1,600 digital subscriptions had been cancelled less than four hours after the news broke.'

It was a reasonable impulse. But if Bezos is indeed why the Post is no longer endorsing candidates, and if people are worried about his outsize influence on our society, they should not be canceling their newspaper subscriptions. They should be canceling their Amazon Prime subscriptions."

"The best thing those readers can do is cancel their $139 annual #AmazonPrime subscriptions, if they have them, and invest that money in the #journalism they say they want and need."

When the LA Times' owner, Patrick Soon-Shiong, killed its endorsement of Kamala Harris, he also quashed a multi-part series, tentatively called "The Case Against Trump," @TheWrap says. So far, three staffers — editorial writer Karin Klein, Pulitzer Prize-winner Robert Green and editorials editor Mariel Garza have quit over the lack of endorsement, with Klein calling Soon-Shiong a "chickensh**." To date, the LA Times Guild is the only institution from the paper that has commented publicly. Here's more — free registration may be required to read the full article.
