"Global markets tumbled sharply after President Trump threatened new tariffs on multiple E.U. countries and the U.K. unless they back U.S. control of Greenland, erasing more than $1 trillion in U.S. stock market value as investors dumped stocks and bonds," (continued in /6)

A friend who's well-informed and far savvier than I am about financial matters — he spent part of his working life as a tax accountant — texts me today to say,
"So, tariffs on, tariffs off. Insiders are cleaning up on stocks. Corruption is rampant."
I reply:
"That’s the game! And we are helpless, we little people — just pawns in the game."

"In order to recognize the spectacle now afflicting the American people, you don’t have to consult your favorite therapist, psychiatrist, or mental health expert. Just look at the U.S. stock tickers. The U.S. markets just suffered their worst trading losses in several months. Why? Because Donald Trump threw a temper tantrum at Europe over Greenland and threatened new tariffs."

"As a technology writer, I'm supposed to be telling you that this bet will some day pay off, because one day we will have shoveled so many words into the word-guessing program that it wakes up and learns how to actually do the jobs it is failing spectacularly at today. This is a proposition akin to the idea that if we keep breeding horses to run faster and faster, one of them will give birth to a locomotive."

"Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella has warned that artificial intelligence (AI) risks becoming a speculative bubble unless its use spreads beyond big tech companies and wealthy economies.
Mr Nadella on Tuesday said that the long-term success of the fast-developing technology would depend on it being used by a broad range of industries as well as on uptake outside of the developed world."

"According to a study from MIT, 95 percent of businesses have seen zero return on any of their investments in AI technology yet. #Trump has made clear he wants the chance to stack the nation’s #CentralBank with #political #loyalists. In court, the admin has strenuously steered clear of this rhetoric. Outside of court, though, Trump has repeatedly boasted about the changes he hopes to bring to the #Fed.

The justices have signaled that the #Fed may be uniquely protected from presidential meddling, even as the court’s conservative majority has allowed #Trump to fire leaders of other #independent #FederalAgencies.

The #FederalReserve sets #MonetaryPolicy & #InterestRates, among other duties, & when #Congress established it, lawmakers worked to insulate it from #political #influence. Its leaders have 14-year terms & may be removed only “for cause.” But #Trump has increasingly attacked the #Fed, pressuring it to lower interest rates as well as trying to push out its chair, #JeromePowell, & fire board governor #LisaCook.
During the oral arguments, Justice Brett M. #Kavanaugh pressed Trump’s representative, Solicitor General D. John #Sauer, over the idea that a victory for #Trump could allow future admins to try to dismiss #Fed officials “at will.” [because, it’s only okay if this admin does it 🤦🏼♀️]
In the first hour, the justices sounded wary of siding with Trump’s view that he should have full discretion to decide what actions are grounds for removal.
I listened to Trump’s #WEF speech when I should have been listening to oral arguments at #SCOTUS.
The Supreme Court repeatedly questioned a lawyer for the #Trump admin about whether the president exceeded his authority in firing #LisaCook, a member of the #FederalReserve board, in a case with potentially enormous consequences for the #economy.
