Podcast: The Corruption of Open Source / Tech Won’t Save Us

Paris Marx invited me to his influential Tech Won’t Save Us podcast to connect two seemingly distinct stories: The WordPress collapse (that I also talked with Hagen about on his podcast) and the new OSI “Open Source AI Definition” (that is not Open Source at all).

I think we have actually reached the limitations of what the Open Source term and concept can do for us and I am not sure it’s enough for the future. Because software projects for the commons and a sort of social good need to face the fact that they are political and therefore need to include actual political representation of alls stakeholders as well as democratic and transparent modes of decision making (at least when reaching a certain traction/user base).

It was a blast to get to talk to Paris again, you can check the episode out at the Tech Won’t Save Us episode page or wherever you get your podcasts.

I started regularly donating about a year ago. I am now supporting 8 different projects with 20,77€ per month, and it didn't hurt at all.

Why pay for something free? Because free software only exists because other people already paid for it. Someone has to do it. It's time to do your part!

If you can afford a subscription service, then you probably can afford a little donation, too. Start with 0.1% of your income.

#LibreOffice 24.2.7 is now available – the final planned update to the 24.2 branch, which reaches end-of-life in November. After that, all users are recommended to upgrade to the new stable branch, LibreOffice 24.8: blog.documentfoundation.org/bl… #foss #opensource #freesoftware

Man, I wish Rust had the 'defer' keyword 😞
Wait...

🦀 **scopeguard**: A Rust library for a convenient RAII scope guard.

🌀 Has a defer! macro.

🔥 Runs a closure on scope exit, even if a panic occurs.

I have a really stupid question. One that hasn't been relevant since the 1990's, but here we are.

Does anybody know if there is a breakdown of #OpenSource #licenses that either explicitly do, or explicitly do not permit them to be in scope of #PenetrationTesting?

I can't go into details about who or why, but it's come up at work and the legal team is now sitting with their heads on their desks weeping openly.

Please boost. A helpful paper might come out of this that will help a lot of people.

I’m very grateful for the incredible people I've met and worked with in the open source communities!
