In August 2020 Stevie Nicks was interviewed about the dangers of COVID - she was imploring fans to mask up to protect themselves - and her.

“It is a silent killer hiding in the shadows. It is stalking you. It doesn’t care who you are…It’s just looking for a victim.”

Yesterday she was spotted at a Taylor Swift concert wearing a respirator. I love to see high profile individuals leading by example. Not just telling people to mask - but actively DOING it 4 years later.

A few days ago - the NYC Dyke March put out a very strong statement saying that in response to proposed mask bans - and in solidarity with the disability community - the march would be fully masked.

I was thrilled to see it as I think these types of statements will help dissuade governments from banning medical masks.

Imagine my surprise when the march happened with a small “masked” section! Everyone else was unmasked.

The great irony here is that kind of segregation is exactly what’s going to happen as more mask ban bills pass. Masking will only be permitted for a very narrow number of “exempt” people while everyone else will go without.

If you’re able to mask up - please do it now. The more people masking the more we can normalize it as a medical tool to protect health!

Very grateful to the people who were masking - but concerned for all those high risk people who showed up expecting a fully masked event.

North Carolina just made medical masks illegal - the Republicans overrode the Governor’s veto. Protecting your health & the health of others is now a crime & people can demand you unmask in public.

The “exemption” is vague & problematic. This will lead to arrests & infections. It further isolates disabled people from society. It will disproportionately harm marginalized individuals and people of colour.

Also can we stop calling people in masks “sheep” yet? They’ve been in the overwhelming minority for years - and now they will literally be committing a crime while trying to protect their health. Masking has become an act of resistance - it’s simply laughable to lambast people as “sheep” for wearing a mask in 2024.

Mask bans tell disabled people they don’t matter. That since we aren’t willingly “just staying home forever” you’re going to FORCE us by making it illegal for us to protect ourselves.

For what? So you don’t have to see a visual reminder that we’re still IN A PANDEMIC. So that you don’t have to question if perhaps YOU should be masking (you should be).

You’re supporting eugenics & ableist policies that are inching closer & closer to fascism while claiming to be all about “freedom”. Please see the absurdity of this and help us fight these dangerous & discriminatory bans.

Seclusion rooms are still a thing in Canadian schools? I can’t even imagine the damage done to a disabled child placed in one of these rooms. The isolation, the fear, the lack of support … being made to feel like you’ve done something “wrong”. We need to do away with these ableist & harmful policies.

Grateful to Act Up New York for speaking out against mask bans. For highlighting the importance of protests for social change.

They were instrumental in turning the tides of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Reagan’s government was completely ignoring the disease and promoting rampant homophobia and discrimination.

Their direct actions - often in the form of protests - got people to pay attention. Got the definition of AIDS changed to include women & heterosexuals. Got access to drugs and treatments. Helped push back against homophobia and misinformation. They did (and do!) incredible work.

It’s harder to organize and protest for better Covid policies because it’s an airborne virus - but people are still doing it. Banning medical masks and respirators will make it impossible for high risk individuals to be safely out in public. It’s ableist, discriminatory and will cost lives.

Their thread contains needed information on who to contact to push back against the proposed ban in New York.

A friend of mine managed to avoid COVID until this winter - when she was infected in a healthcare setting. She’s not recovered. She’s showing signs of Long Covid & POTS.

Spent last 3 weeks being worked up for cardiac issues - no one masked for her. Then she landed in ER

She had been dealing with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea for 4 days and had become tachycardic with a heart rate of 140. She was unable to keep fluids or electrolytes down & running a fever. But the way she had been recently treated was dissuading her from getting care

Prior to the ER visit she spent three weeks in hospitals & clinics. She had a ton of cardiac testing, lab work and procedures to determine if she has Long Covid. Despite the assumption being she’s chronically ill due to Covid - not ONE healthcare worker masked for her

She had to do a stress echo in her respirator while having breathing difficulties - and rather than offering to mask up she was repeatedly encouraged to take her mask off. They rolled their eyes at her for wanting to keep it on & marked her treadmill test “non compliant”

She’s had to repeatedly chase down results, beg for follow up appointments and even had a significant error go unnoticed & unaddressed over a weekend until she could connect with her GP. That error resulted in an infection which only worsened her baseline

At this point it’s becoming clear her care is being negatively impacted due to her need to avoid another Covid infection. She feels increasingly judged at each interaction & has to quietly endure the pain of being treated like a nuisance whose issues are all in her head.

By the time she needs the ER - she doesn’t even have the strength to ask them to mask. She’s vomiting and having a difficult time keeping her mask on - so she tries to go outside to vomit. No one offers her any help. She isn’t even surprised

She finally sees the doctor who says he will not consider giving her an IV until she removes her mask so he can assess how dry her mouth is. Her lab work was already back showing dehydration & electrolyte abnormalities. Why does she need to remove her mask?

She’s out of energy to argue - so she removes it & he proceeds to examine her from across the room. He was observing social distancing (which we know doesn’t work for airborne viruses) even though it meant he couldn’t SEE in her mouth. Yet he STILL made her remove her mask

Now that she’s been a good & compliant patient and removed her mask… they finally order IV fluids which bring her heart rate down (as we would expect if she’s developed POTS). Once her blood pressure is above 90/60 she’s discharged with no follow up care in place.

No explanation of what’s wrong with her, of why the fluids worked or how to take care of herself at home. I had to provide that information to her. She was genuinely shocked when they told her she was being sent home because NOTHING was resolved.

This is when I had to explain to her the realities of being chronically ill and needing the ER. You can’t expect them to manage the chronic condition. In their eyes the only thing that absolutely needed treatment was the dehydration because it created hypotension.

As soon as the hypotension was resolved - she was out the door. Nevermind the fact that she will probably be hypotensive again within 12 hours since her GI issues weren’t addressed and she wasn’t advised to consume electrolytes, salt pills or extra fluids.

Thankfully she has a good family doctor who was able to provide additional guidance - but MANY people do not. She could have just as easily bounced right back into the ER with the exact same problem. And our healthcare system is beyond overwhelmed. 1/2

It’s been a particularly difficult week where I’ve been let down by a number of people who I thought had my back… and the rampant ableism in society is wearing on me.

I revisited one of the first articles I wrote about being disabled & chronically ill… and am saddened that nothing has changed. Things haven’t improved and if anything people are LESS tolerant & more ableist now than a year ago.

It all started when someone said to me “you’ve been sick for years - just die already”. Whenever I think of that statement I find myself wondering if people would have EVER said something like that before Covid. Many may have thought it - but would they verbalize it?

The pandemic is fueling hatred of disabled and chronically ill people to the point where they will say the cruelest things without a second thought - and it’s leading nowhere good.

The NC Governor vetoed the anti-mask bill, and now it will go back to the House of Rep who could over-ride that. We cannot have that. It does not protect maskers.

I put info why, including a sample email and the email addresses of the house that you can copy and paste and send out ASAP

We've had to let go of friends who believe covid is "just a cold" or who deny long covid -- and it hurts.

This is the last day to pre-order and support The Covid Safety Handbook: https://kck.st/3KhdUdS
