There's been a mini-surge of new clinical trials for next generation Covid vax:
- an intranasal vaccine from the NIAID going into phase 1;
- another intranasal vaccine got a US Project NextGen-funded big phase 2 trial - & so did an encouraging nextgen vax for people with immunosuppression;
- another vax designed to improve protection for people with immunosuppression is in phase 1 in Australia.
All this & more in my new update post @PLOS

It’s been a slow month for reporting of results, but a big one for new trials and for potential improved vaccine boosters…Hilda Bastian (Absolutely Maybe)
"This year's Hajj pilgrimage was marred by extreme heat, with temperatures soaring beyond 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit), resulting in over 1,300 fatalities."
&
"Initially, we thought it was related to heatwaves because the temperature was excessively high, but we realised that there is a respiratory syndrome with the cases of death," Sy said."

If you have symptoms, stay home. Then test two days later.
“If a person with #COVID19 tests immediately with a rapid test when symptoms emerge, they receive a false negative as much as 92% of the time. Waiting two days after symptoms brings that rate down to 70%… Our symptoms are happening sooner, but it takes longer to reach enough virus in your body for it to be detectable.”

STUDY finds NON-COVID death rates are cut roughly in HALF among those who get #COVID19 vaccines:
“After adjusting for confounders with the propensity score approach, the adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) were 0.46 after dose 1 and 0.48 after dose 2 of the BNT162b2 (Pfizer BioNTech) vaccine, 0.41 after dose 1 and 0.38 after dose 2 of the mRNA-1273 (Moderna) vaccine, and 0.55 after receipt of Ad26.COV2.S (Janssen ).”

I knew the CDC is no longer tracking Covid cases, but this still seems like an absurd state of affairs. "Most likely increasing"?
"Cases are most likely increasing in 39 states & aren’t declining anywhere in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. ...
"The CDC no longer tracks Covid cases, but it estimates transmission based on emergency department visits."

COVID infection endangers pregnancies and newborns. Why aren’t parents being warned?
The Gauntlet

“Despite pre-natal education’s reputation for warning new mothers of every possible danger from jumping on trampolines to eating soft cheeses, contracting a vascular virus that increases risk of pre-eclampsia, pre-term birth, miscarriage and stillbirth is being ignored. Let’s look at the evidence.”
From Dr. David Putrino, Director of Rehabilitation Innovation for the Mount Sinai Health System, and a Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation & Human Performance at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai:
"We need to be very, very firm with our messaging that there is no such thing as a mild SARS-CoV-2 infection. There is no such thing as a SARS-CoV-2 infection that does NOT have prolonged consequences.”

For the “Just the flu” crowd. STUDY compares EKG changes in people with #COVID19 versus other viral infections (Flu-A, Flu-B, , RSV, etc.) Finds “a statistically significant increase in ischemic findings and arrhythmias in patients with COV vs. non-COV infections.” In fact, new ischemic and new rhythm abnormalities were ~50% higher with COVID than other viral infections. Not just the flu!

Just 5% of the US population is concerned about #COVID19. A STUDY finds that:
5%, named “COVID-Specific Health & Resignation to Isolation Attributable to COVID”, had scores suggesting a focus on COVID-specific preventive health behaviors along with noting the requisite isolation and disengagement entailed in the social distancing necessary for COVID-19 prevention.
Three other groups were identified, and none cared much about the importance of COVID-19 prevention.

Proper #COVID19 language:
We ARE in a pandemic.
The global health emergencies are over.
We are NOT post-COVID.
We are post-caring about COVID across public health agencies and the population.
The pandemic is NOT behind us.
Most COVID monitoring and precautions are behind us.
COVID IS still a risk.
And most importantly, we truly will not know the long-term impact of one infection, much less five or more infections, for another three to five years.
We've had to let go of friends who believe covid is "just a cold" or who deny long covid -- and it hurts.
